New state representative apologizes for nonexistent mailer
WARREN, R.I. (AP) — A newly elected Rhode Island state representative says he is sorry for misleading local Democratic officials about a nonexistent campaign mailer.
Democratic Rep.-elect Laufton Ascencao admitted the deception after the Warren Town Democratic Committee filed a complaint with state elections officials. The 25-year-old Ascencao was accused of providing a fake invoice to prove he sent a political mailer he now admits he never sent.
He calls his actions “stupid and immature” and says he has explained the situation to the Board of Elections and that he has not filed any false reports. The town committee is asking Ascencao to step down and not take the oath of office in January.
Ascencao indicated in a statement that he still intends to be sworn into office.
