2018 Cleveland Arts Prize winners include Rita Dove, John ‘Derf’ Backderf, William Griswold

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The winners of the 2018 Cleveland Arts Prize include an internationally renowned graphic novelist and cartoonist, a former United States Poet Laureate and a co-owner of the iconic Coventry Road’s most beloved bookstore and literary hangout.

Here are this year’s winners, announced Thursday, and their awards:

Emerging Artist Award

Painter Darius Steward (visual arts) and Mark Reigelman, a public-space, conceptual artist (design).

Mid-Career Award

John “Derf” Backderf, a graphic novelist (“My Friend Dahmer”) and pioneer underground cartoonist (visual arts); and John Williams, an architect and founder of Process Creative Studios (design).

Lifetime Achievement Award

Rita Dove, an award-winning poet, playwright and the first African-American United States Poet Laureate (literature).

Barbara S. Robinson Prize (new for 2018)

William Griswold, who was named ninth director of the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2014.

Robert Bergman Prize

Louise and Thomas Boddie, who founded the Boddie Recording Co. in 1959, one of the first African-American-owned studios in the United States.

Martha Joseph Prize

Suzanne DeGaetano, co-owner for 30 years of the venerable indie bookstore Mac’s Backs in Cleveland Heights.

Special Honoree

Robert P. Madison, the distinguished architect whose firm Robert P. Madison International has trained nearly 200 African-American architects and engineers since the mid-1950s.

This year’s award program will also introduce the first annual On the Verge Fellowship winners. They are Stephen Bivens (visual arts), Stephanie Fields (literature), Amanda King (visual arts), Damien McClendon (literature) and Kayla Thomas (dance).

The Cleveland Arts Prize is funded by the Cleveland Foundation.

The 58th annual award ceremony will be on Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Gartner Auditorium of the Cleveland Museum of Art, 11150 East Blvd. The City Club of Cleveland’s Dan Moulthrop will be master of ceremonies. Ticket prices begin at $75 and go to $250. Tickets go on sale Sept.1.
