Man who killed wife sentenced to 50 years in prison

March 2, 2019

A San Benito man who shot his wife five times in front of their teenage and four-year-old sons will spend 50 years in prison.

Alvaro Mata Jr. pleaded guilty earlier this year to shooting and killing 36-year-old Jessica Cortina on Nov. 14, 2017.

After two days of testimony, 197th State District Judge Aldofo Cordova handed down the sentence, which includes a $10,000 fine.

In a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to ask Cordova to sentence Mata to between 20 and 50 years in exchange for his guilty plea, which he entered to spare his four sons, who were in the house when he killed Cortina, from reliving that night during a trial.

During the trial, the prosecution played a gripping 911 call from that night when Cortina’s 17-year-old son called to report that his mother was bleeding from her stomach.
