Romania Beats Belarus in Davis Cup
BRASOV, Romania (AP) _ Victor Hanescu beat Vladimir Voltchkov of Belarus 7-6 (2), 6-4, 7-6 (6) Sunday to give Romania a 3-2 victory in their Davis Cup World Group match.
Earlier in the day, top Romanian player Andrei Pavel defeated Max Mirnyi 6-1, 7-6 (0), 4-6, 6-3 for a 2-2 tie.
In the second reverse singles match, Voltchkov started well, but Hanescu took control with a break at 5-4 in the first set.
Hanescu showed good concentration and continued with strong baseline play, while Voltchkov showed his frustration by hitting his racket on the ground several times after losing important points.
Hanescu managed to save three set points in the decider to force the tiebreaker and served an ace to win the match.
Romania plays either the United States or Croatia in the quarterfinals.
