RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Josef Vasicek scored 52 seconds into overtime to back the shutout goaltending of Tom Barrasso on Sunday in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 1-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Barrasso stopped 28 shots and recorded the 356th win of his career, moving past Rogie Vachon for sole possession of 10th place on the all-time NHL victory list. It was his 36th shutout.

Carolina kept the game scoreless by killing a high-sticking penalty against Jeff O’Neill with 3:32 left in regulation.

The Hurricanes allowed just two shots down a man, but Claude Lemieux took a five-minute penalty against Carolina defenseman Aaron Ward for head-butting seconds after O’Neill left the penalty box and with 1:32 left in regulation.

More than three minutes of the Phoenix penalty carried over into the extra period and Carolina took advantage.

Former Carolina goaltender Sean Burke made the initial save on a shot by Ron Francis from the blue line, but the rebound got away and Vasicek poked it home for his seventh of the season.

O’Neill, tied for second in the NHL with 17 points coming in, also assisted on the power-play goal.

The only power play through two periods went to Carolina as Daymond Langkow was called for roughing, but the Hurricanes failed to get a shot on Burke.

Barrasso’s biggest tests came after 43 seconds when he stopped a shot from the slot by Todd Warriner, and late in the second on a rebound shot by Shane Doan.

Notes: Carolina’s Sami Kapanen had his career-best seven-game point streak snapped. ... Phoenix has scored just six first-period goals. ... The Coyotes have scored two or less goals in 11 games of their 14 games.
