GIRLS BASKETBALL: Coughlin Coach Quinn Suspended Indefinitely

January 8, 2019

Coughlin girls basketball coach John Quinn III was suspended indefinitely by the Wilkes-Barre Area School District following an incident that occurred during Friday night’s home game against Wyoming Area. Wilkes-Barre Area School District superintendent Dr. Brian Costello confirmed the suspension Monday night. Costello said the incident is under investigation, and that Quinn will be suspended with pay until the investigation is complete. “There was an incident that occurred against Wyoming Area and what we do is, during an investigation, we always suspend with pay as long as the investigation goes on,” Costello said. Because it is a personnel issue, Costello could not get into the specifics of the incident or the investigation. He hopes to have the investigation completed this week. “Human Resources will head the investigation,” Costello said. “They will go through the typical process and review all the information they receive. We will make a final decision sometime this week.” Coughlin assistant coach Phil Schoener will take over as interim head coach during the length of Quinn’s suspension. Schoener coached the team during Monday night’s game at Tunkhannock. A few weeks ago, Coughlin dropped its junior varsity program and will play only varsity games for the remainder of the season. Coughlin lost to Wyoming Area, 48-38, and the incident happened late in the fourth quarter. The game was allowed to be completed. The Crusaders were 0-9 heading into the Tunkhannock game and were outscored by their opponents, 422-229. Coughlin finished last season 1-22, and Quinn is in his second season as the head coach of the team. “It is a personnel issue, and at this stage of the game I can’t get into specifics,” Costello said. Quinn’s father, John R. Quinn, is a member of the Wilkes-Barre Area school board. Contact the writer: sbennett@citizensvoice.com; 570 821-2062; @CVSteveBennett on Twitter
