MILAN, Italy (AP) _ Boris Becker, the two-time Wimbledon champion, said Tuesday he would serve in the West German army if drafted and also consider volunteering.

Becker, 19, the world’s second-ranked tennis player, issued a statement following a West German newspaper report that he might join the West German army.

As a resident of Monaco, Becker could be exempted from the draft.

″If I am drafted, I am going to do my military duty,″ he said. ″If I cannot be drafted, it’s possible to volunteer until I am 28. This is a possibility I have been considering.″

Becker’s father, Karl Heinz Becker, was quoted by the German newspaper Welt Am Sonntag as saying that his son would agree to be drafted.
