December 1, 2018

After signing 35-year-old Kurt Suzuki recently, the Washington Nationals have added a complement for the backstop.

The Nationals traded for Yan Gomes from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for pitcher Jefry Rodriguez, outfielder Daniel Johnson and a player to be named later, the team announced Friday night.

In 2018, Gomeshit .266 with 26 doubles, 16 home runs and 48 RBI in 112 games. He had the highest batting average, slugging percentage (.449) and OPS (.757) of all catchers in the American League.

Gomes is 31, and he and Suzuki are expected to split daily catching duties for Washington in 2019 while adding some offense to the lineup.

Rodriguez was a righty who was handed the ball for eight starts last year. He went 3-3 with a 5.71 ERA. Johnson is a minor league prospect the Nationals drafted in the fifth round in 2016.
