Fake Bomb Planted Behind Iranian Restaurant With AM-Vincennes-Bomb

March 13, 1989

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) _ A device that appeared to be a pipe bomb was planted behind an Iranian restaurant Sunday, forcing authorities to evacuate the area before explosives experts determined it was a fake, police said.

No arrests were made in the case, authorities said. Police Sgt. Tim Brown speculated that it may have been in response to Friday’s bombing of a van being driven by the wife of the Navy captain who mistakenly shot down an Iranian airliner over the Persian Gulf.

″There were no threats and no prior problems of any kind, but with all the media attention from the San Diego bombing a lot of people might have been upset,″ Brown said.

The replica pipe bomb was discovered by a teen-age employee of a neighboring business behind the Dehkadeh restaurant about 11 a.m., the sergeant said. He said the phony device was fitted with a wire inside, likely to make it appear realistic when X-rayed.

About five nearby homes and the occupants of about 10 businesses were evacuated for several hours.

The restaurant was about to open for lunch when the pipe was found, manager Saeed Bashizadeh said.

″We hope it wasn’t because of the bomb in San Diego because we are here now and don’t want any trouble,″ Bashizadeh said.
