MUNICH, West Germany (AP) _ Northern Ireland's David Feherty shot a 68 Saturday to take an eight-stroke lead in the BMW International Open golf tournament.

Feherty's torrid round came on the North Munich Eichenried Golf Club's par- 72, 6,964-yard course to give him the lead with a 196 total.

Fred Couples of Palm Beach, Fla., moved up to second with a score of 204 after a third-round 67.

Briton Philip Walton shot a 68 for a third-place total of 205, and countryman Gordon J. Brand was in fourth place with a 70-206.

Feherty, 31, had led the tournament from the start, having shot a 10-under- par 62 in the opening round. He finished fifth in this year's British Open and ranks 19th among Europe's professional golfers in the money-winning standings.

''In golf, anything is possible,'' Couples said, noting the contest wasn't over despite Feherty's sizeable lead. ''The picture could change'' if he has a tremendous round and Feherty a mediocre one on Sunday, Couples said.

Four golfers are tied for fifth with 207, including Tom Purtzer of Phoenix, Ariz., who has shot 69 in all three rounds.

Mike Harwood of Australia had a 66 and Swedes Ove Sellberg and Mats Lanner both had 70s to join Purtzer at 207 going into Sunday's final round.
