5 Kurdish rebels killed in clash in eastern Turkey

April 12, 2015

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Officials say five Kurdish rebels have been killed in eastern Turkey in a clash sparked by a rebel attack on troops that wounded four soldiers.

A Kurdish news agency said a civilian was also killed in the fighting.

The clash on Saturday came despite a peace process between Turkey and the rebel group, PKK, aimed at ending decades of violent strife.

The Governor’s office for Agri province said late Saturday the rebels fired on troops who were being sent to Yukari Tutek village to police a festival. The military sent reinforcement troops, reconnaissance planes and helicopters to the area to battle dozens of militants, killing five of them.

The pro-Kurdish DIHA news agency said Sunday a Kurdish activist was also killed while trying to stop the violence.
