DETROIT (AP) _ Robert Fick, a reserve catcher for the Detroit Tigers, confirmed Saturday he got into a fight early Thursday morning at the Hockeytown Cafe, owned by Tigers owner Mike Ilitch.
``There was an altercation,″ Fick said. ``There’s an investigation going on and it’s being handled internally to find out what really happened.″
A Detroit television station quoted an unnamed witness as saying that Fick yelled a racial slur to initiate a fight with a bouncer. Fick was with teammates when the incident took place, including Wendell Magee, who is black.
``I was standing right next to him the whole time and he never used any racial slurs,″ Magee said. ``Why would I defend him if he did? If he would have done anything like that, there would’ve been a riot.″
Fick said he regrets what took place.
``It’s a big lesson for me,″ he said.
