Police: Student assaulted Cary middle school staffer
Police are investigating an assault at a Cary middle school that sent a staff member to a local hospital.
The incident occurred Monday in the cafeteria at West Lake Middle School, at 4600 W. Lake Road.
“During lunch, a student got into an altercation which resulted in one of our staff members being knocked to the ground,” Principal Anne Marie Adkins said in a statement sent to parents of students. “We were quickly able to address the situation and notified local law enforcement.”
Because of a staffing shortage, West Lake Middle didn’t have a school resource officer on campus at the time, but Cary police said officers arrived quickly after a 911 call from the school.
“The staff member was injured by the student,” Cary police Capt. John Szymeczek said. “It’s unusual – certainly in a middle school even more unusual.”
The staffer, whose name hasn’t been released, suffered only minor injuries.
Szymeczek said police are still investigating to decide whether the student should be charged as a juvenile.
Adkins said school officials also are considering disciplinary action for the student.
“Please know that I care passionately about our students, our staff and our school. Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to providing an environment focused on teaching and learning,” she said in her message to parents.
