In many ways, last season was an anomaly for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Their goaltending tandem, traditionally one of the AHL’s best, was essentially never set until the last month. Their special teams — the power play, in particular — dropped off severely, and they lost their captain for a total of four months. Despite all that, they still almost won the Atlantic Division.

The upcoming season should transpire much more smoothly.

The power play should improve, especially with the additions of skilled defensemen like Will O’Neill and Stefan Elliott. John Muse and Anthony Peters are a solid duo manning the pipes until Tristan Jarry is back healthy, and the team has plenty of veterans and players with NHL experience to make up for the absence of Tom Kostopoulos.

But, the fact remains the Penguins have to make up for more than 100 goals worth of production lost, and other teams in the Atlantic like Springfield and Bridgeport have improved. Furthermore, offensive threats Teddy Blueger and Zach Aston-Reese appear ticketed for Pittsburgh at some point.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton does have the overall depth to make the playoffs for a 17th straight season, but it could be a more difficult path than in years past.
