Chivas edged toward relegation after 0-0 draw

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Chivas failed to score for the fifth consecutive game and moved closer to relegation after managing just a 0-0 draw with Cruz Azul at home in the Mexican league Sunday.

League leader America suffered a 1-0 loss to hometown rivals Pumas, its first of the season, Second-placed Monterrey is level on points after securing a 1-0 victory against Queretaro, but are behind on goal difference after seven rounds of matches in Mexico’s first division.

In other weekend results, Tijuana drew 1-1 with Leones Negros, Puebla defeated Morelia 3-2, Chiapas overcame Tigres 2-0, Pachuca won 2-1 against Leon, Atlas drew 1-1 with Santos Laguna and Toluca secured a 2-1 victory against Veracruz.

Chivas had more possession and shots on target than Cruz Azul, but were unable to finish. Jesus Sanchez came close in the 42nd minute, but his strike was blocked by Cruz Azul defender Julio Dominguez.

Puma’s Dante Lopez put an end to America’s unbeaten streak with a deflected shot in the 88th, while Monterrey’s Humberto Suazo scored the game’s only goal from a counterattack four minutes before the end of the first half.

Venezuelan international Juan Arango gave Tijuana the lead with a 40 yard (meter) strike in the 23rd, but Fidel Martinez answered with a left-footed shot from just inside the area in the 77th.

Colombian forward Wilberto Cosme scored in both halves for Puebla, and his close range shot in the 61st was the difference against Morelia.

First half goals from Diego Alaniz and Miguel Sansores briefly put Morelia in the lead, but Francisco Acuna equalized for Puebla with a deflected strike two minutes before the winner.

Brazilian Bruno Pires put visiting Chiapas ahead with a powerful header three minutes into the second half and Emiliano Armenteros sealed the win by stroking the ball into the net in the final minute of play.

Two first-half strikes from 19-year-old Hirving Lozano were enough for Pachuca at Leon, although Carlos Pena pulled one back for the reigning champion in the 57th.

Javier Orozco’s side-footed shot gave Santos Laguna the advantage six minutes before half time, but Edy Brambila curled the ball into the top right corner to equalize in the 61st.

Paraguayan international Paulo da Silva headed in the winner for Toluca from a free-kick in the 71st.
