Think pink: Stylish products to help the cause
October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is designed to do just that, bring awareness.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, other than skin cancer, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
A signature fundraising event is the annual Komen Houston Race for the Cure. Now in its 28th year, the 5k-race takes place Saturday , starting at Sam Houston Park, 1000 Bagby in downtown. (Race-day registration starts at 6:30 a.m.)
This year for the first time, the race co-chairs are men: Gilbert Garcia, a managing partner with Garcia Hamilton & Associates whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, and KPRC Channel 2’s Khambrel Marshall, who has worked with Komen for more than a decade, including serving on its board. This is also the first year Komen Houston will have two races in one year. A race was held in January, after it was resescheduled for Hurricane Harvey.
“The more we can help the community be healthy, the better,” Marshall said. “When you think about the women who are impacted every day and their families — when you multiply those numbers, that’s a tremendous amount of people who are anguished. Everybody can do something to help.”
During the month, there are also a plethora of pink products designed to support and help fund breast cancer education and research. Here are a few:
