Police: Mother videotaped daughter’s suicide attempt

March 2, 1997

PINCONNING, Mich. (AP) _ A woman swallowed antidepressant and pain-killing pills in an apparent suicide attempt that was videotaped by her mother and younger sister, authorities said Saturday.

The mother called authorities Saturday afternoon about a half-hour after the 18-year-old woman took the pills at a Pinconning home, sheriff’s Sgt. Devere Woods said.

``It was not a successful suicide attempt,″ he said.

On the tape, the mother asks her daughter what she was doing and what kinds of pills she was taking, authorities said. They said there was no attempt to stop the woman, who said she wanted to die. The camera was operated by her 14-year-old sister.

``The tape probably will be turned over to the (state) Family Independence Agency to determine what should be done,″ Sgt. Dean Woods told The Bay City Times.

Deputies did not release the names of the people involved.

Bay Medical Center officials told deputies the girl would be hospitalized for several days, the newspaper reported.
