Heavy rains spurs flooding, rescues in northern New Jersey

September 26, 2018

BOGOTOA, N.J. (AP) — Heavy rains have spurred major flooding in areas of northern New Jersey, trapping dozens of motorists and residents who needed to be rescued by emergency responders.

The rains started Tuesday afternoon and continued through most of the night.

Authorities in Bogota used a military-style Humvee to rescue a driver and his elderly passenger from a car that was trapped by flood waters. And more than 100 people were rescued from an industrial park in Fairview as buildings began to take on water.

The downpours also forced the closure of parts of highways between Newark and Jersey City on Tuesday night.

Forecasters say more rain could fall in the region Wednesday.
