St. Louis 76, NBC Thunder 70
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Former Pepperdine guard Shann Ferch scored 31 points for the NBC Thunder Monday night, but Saint Louis University still managed a 76-70 win in their first exhibition game of the season.
``Not perfect, but not bad,″ Billikens coach Charlie Spoonhour said in faint praise of his team’s effort.
``Overall we played OK,″ senior Jeff Harris said. ``But I wouldn’t want to continue this into the season.″
The Billikens were outscored in the second half and committed 15 turnovers as they blew a 16-point lead and allowed the Thunder to tie the game with four minutes remaining.
But Spoonhour said the game served as a lesson.
``We learned we’ve got to get a lot better defensively,″ said Spoonhour.
Harris finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Corey Frazier ended with 13, impressing Harris.
``If Corey continues to shoot the ball the way he did tonight, we’ll be all right,″ Harris said. ``And Virgel (Cobbin), he got on a great streak early.″
Cobbin, a sophomore guard, had nine points in nine minutes during the first half. He has been slowed by a sprained ankle and didn’t play in the second half, as Spoonhour got to look at all his players.
SLU will conclude its exhibition season Saturday against Arkansas Express before opening the regular season Nov. 20 against Arkansas-Little Rock.
