CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) _ Andre Rodriguez scored a career-high 28 points Saturday night and Eastern Illinois held on for an 87-84 win over Central Connecticut State.

The Panthers, who won the game at the foul line with 30-for-43 shooting, never trailed after a 44-35 advantage at halftime of the Mid-Continent Conference game.

The Blue Devils (10-10 overall, 6-6 Mid-Con) closed to within three points on four occasions. Eastern Illinois (9-10, 6-5) was ahead 85-81 with 25 seconds left when Rick Kaye hit two free throws for the Panthers.

Central Connecticut’s Garrett Petteway made a 3-pointer with 1 second remaining.

Keith Closs topped the Devils with 22 points, while Johnny Hernandez had 16 and Michael Slaughter 13 for Eastern Illinois.
