Town’s vote will determine school district merger

January 9, 2018

WOODFORD, Vt. (AP) — Residents in the Vermont town of Woodford will vote again on a proposed school merger.

The Bennington Banner reports Woodford’s decision will determine if the new Mount Anthony Unified School District can move forward Tuesday. Woodford and Pownal had declined the offer in November while Bennington and Shaftsbury voted in favor of the merger.

The towns missed the Nov. 30 deadline for tax incentives. Democratic state Rep. Alice Miller, of Shaftsbury, says the law isn’t fair and towns should be entitled to the incentives if the new district is formed.

Officials say Woodford residents could see a 16-cent tax increase if the new district moves forward. However, school board member Dick Frantz says the district could lose its Small Schools Grant if it doesn’t merge.
