CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) _ Jeff George threw two touchdown passes Saturday, and Illinois held Utah State to just 24 yards offense in the first half for a 41-2 victory.

George hit Dan Donovan with a 2-yard TD pass early in the second quarter, and two minutes later lofted a 27-yard scoring pass to Mike Bellamy.

Illinois led 31-0 at halftime and coasted to victory in its home opener before 61,553.

Illinois improved to 2-1, while Utah State suffered its third consecutive loss of the season.

Doug Higgins put the Illini on the scoreboard with a 21-yard field goal in the first quarter, and Ken Thomas ran 8 yards for a touchdown and a 10-0 lead before the period ended.

Victor Bowlay-Williams added a 1-yard touchdown run to George’s two TD passes in the second quarter, and Wagner Lester raced 9 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter for a 38-0 Illini margin.

Utah State - which did not get a first down until the 6:15 mark of the third quarter - got its only points on a safety. An Illinois snap sailed over punter Brian Menkhausen’s head and into the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Higgins added a 27-yard field goal for Illinois later in the period.

Illinois’ leading rusher this season, Howard Griffith, suffered a knee injury late in the first half and did not play in the second half.
