NEW YORK (AP) _ Freshman guard Khalid El-Amin rebounded from a poor outing in the Preseason NIT semifinals by scoring 29 points in the third-place game Friday night as No. 11 Connecticut beat Arizona State 82-61.

The 5-foot-10 El-Amin was 3-for-18 from the field in the Huskies’ 67-60 loss to Florida State on Wednesday, but he was 11-for-21 in the win over the Sun Devils (3-2).

The Huskies (5-1) took control early against Arizona State, which scared No. 2 Kansas in the semifinals before losing 90-88 in overtime.

Connecticut scored the last eight points of the half to take a 42-26 lead and an 8-2 run to open the third quarter made it 50-28. The Huskies led by as many as 25 points before a 16-6 run made it 74-59 with 3:40 left, the closest Arizona State would get.

Richard Hamilton added 19 points for Connecticut, while Kevin Freeman had 10.

Bobby Lazor led Arizona State with 22 points, while Jeremy Veal had 17 and Mike Batiste 10.

Veal and Eddie House combined for 51 points against Kansas, but had only 22 against the Huskies.

House’s first points of the game came on a 3-pointer that brought Arizona State within 54-41 with 5:44 left in the third quarter. Connecticut answered with a 12-0 run, with Hamilton and El-Amin each scoring five points. El-Amin started the burst with a 3-pointer and Hamilton capped it with one.

El-Amin had scored 23 points twice this season, the last time against Rhode Island in the Preseason NIT quarterfinals.
