13 Killed in Colombia Plane Crash
MEDELLIN, Colombia (AP) _ A small passenger plane crashed near the northwest city of Medellin on Saturday, killing 14 people. One man survived.
The Canadian-built Twin Otter of the national airline ACES experienced mechanical failure before crashing into a hill five minutes after taking off, airport officials said.
The plane was flying to Bahia Solano, a port on the Pacific coast and a popular tourist destination. Medellin is 155 miles northwest of the capital, Bogota.
Among the dead were two Dutch women, Renee Groenewoud, an embassy official, and Mariam Van Paassen, authorities said.
The only survivor, a 39-year-old man, was being treated for multiple fractures. A 15-year-old girl who survived the crash with severe burns died later in a hospital.
