Gunman Kills One, Wounds Two
MILROY, Pa. (AP) _ A gunman with a high-powered rifle killed one person and seriously wounded two others Friday night, then fled into a heavily wooded state park, authorities said.
″We’re in the woods looking for him,″ said state police Sgt. Anthony Pupo, who would not release the name of the suspect.
A state trooper was among those shot, but authorities would not identify the dead person.
Searchers were combing the 220-acre Reeds Gap State Park in Mifflin County, but Pupo said a motive for the shootings was not known.
Township firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a home just beyond Reeds Gap State Park about 7 p.m., Pupo said.
″The shooting was in the area of the fire, but we don’t know the exact sequence of events,″ Pupo said. ″There were several shots fired.″
Park rangers evacuated about 50 people from the park as the search got under way, said park Superintendent Harry Leslie. The park will remain closed as long as state police are conducting a search, Leslie said.
Trooper Phillip Rickert, 32, shot in the leg, and Darryl Fultz, 24, shot in the abdomen, were listed in serious condition and had been airlifted to the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, authorities had said earlier.
The identity and condition of the third victim was not immediately available.
