Man charged with deadly South Los Angeles shooting

August 21, 2019

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A reputed gang member has been charged with killing two men and wounding a third in a South Los Angeles shooting.

Twenty-seven--year-old Jonathan Charles Johnson of Lancaster was charged Tuesday with murder and other crimes for the Aug. 14 attack. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.

Authorities say a passenger in a car opened fire in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood as 27-year-old Flores Vasquez was dropping off a baby shower gift for his childhood friend, 24-year-old Alfredo Carrera.

Vasquez was a doctoral student in physics at the University of California, Irvine.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred says neither had gang ties and the motive for the attack is under investigation.

Johnson was pulled over Friday in a car that was captured on video near the crime scene.
