Triple Homicide Suspect Dies at Hospital

April 25, 2003

BALTIMORE (AP) _ A man suspected of killing his wife and her parents, then apparently shooting himself in the head hours later, has died in a Virginia hospital, authorities said.

Jack Durrett, 43, died Thursday, a day after police used a cell phone to track him to a wooded area in Pendleton Co., W.Va. They found him minutes after he was wounded, Lt. Mark Neal of the West Virginia State Police said.

Durrett was suspected in the slayings of Diana Durrett, 40, and her parents, Nathaniel and Mary Kunes of Coronado, Calif. The three were found fatally shot earlier that day at Diana Durrett’s home in suburban Baltimore, more than 100 miles from the crime scene.

Court records showed that the Durretts were getting a divorce and were fighting over custody of their 6-year-old son. The boy was not home when the shooting occurred.

Later that day, West Virginia troopers spotted Jack Durrett’s car on a roadside in a rugged, mountainous recreation area in Franklin. Durrett was found about 200 yards into the woods, Neal said.

Fisherman nearby said they had heard a gunshot about 15 minutes earlier, Neal said.

Durrett was taken by police helicopter to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va., where he died, said hospital administrator John Bright.
