5 charged in killing of Bonanno crime family associate
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal grand jury has charged five people in the October slaying of a Bronx man who allegedly had ties to the Bonanno crime family.
Prosecutors say a murder-for-hire conspiracy targeted 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola at a McDonald’s drive-thru. Zottola was shot in the head, neck and abdomen while sitting in his vehicle.
The defendants also were charged in the shooting of Zottola’s 41-year-old son, Salvatore Zottola in July. The younger Zottola survived that shooting.
Prosecutors said in court filings that the conspiracy had been planned for months. Authorities say the elder Zottola was the victim of several other assaults over the past year.
Three of the defendants were awaiting arraignment Tuesday in Brooklyn. The other two are set to appear in federal court on Wednesday.
