Hoiles Ties Grand Slam Record
CLEVELAND (AP) _ Baltimore’s Chris Hoiles became the ninth major leaguer and first catcher to hit two grand slams in one game Thursday night against the Cleveland Indians.
Hoiles homered in the third off Charles Nagy and in the eighth against Ron Villone, giving the Orioles a 15-2 lead. The last player to hit two slams in a game was Robin Ventura of the Chicago White Sox, who connected twice on Sept. 4, 1995, against Texas.
Hoiles is the third Orioles player to do it, joining Jim Gentile (1961) and Frank Robinson (1970). His eight RBIs were a career high. Eight of the nine players tied for the record are American Leaguers.
Tony Cloninger, a former Braves pitcher and current Yankees coach, is the only NL player to do it.
