1906 _ The Chicago Cubs scored 11 runs in the first inning off New York Giants aces Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity and went on to a 19-0 victory.

1938 _ Cleveland pitcher Johnny Allen walked off the mound in the second inning and didn't return after plate umpire Bill McGowan wanted Allen's dangling sweat shirt sleeve to be cut off because it was distracting Boston Red Sox hitters. Allen was fined $250 by manager Ossie Vitt and the shirt ended up in the Hall of Fame.

1972 _ Gene Alley's bases-loaded walk gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 1-0, 18-inning victory over the San Diego Padres.

1982 _ Steve Garvey of the Los Angeles Dodgers became the fifth player in major league history to play in 1,000 consecutive games.

1983 _ Philadelphia's Steve Carlton struck out Lonnie Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals in the third inning for career strikeout No. 3,522, overtaking Nolan Ryan as the career strikeout king. St. Louis, however, beat the Phillies, 2-1.

1989 _ Ernie Whitt had three hits and drove in three runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 in the first game in major league history played indoors and outdoors on the same day. With threatening rain, the SkyDome's $100 million retractable roof was closed.
