Tanker Rams Fishing Boat, Kills 4

November 30, 1997

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) _ A gas tanker rammed a recreational fishing boat Sunday in the foggy strait between Sweden and Denmark, killing four people.

The impact hurled five people _ including the two crew members and two passengers who died _ into the 43-degree water of the Oeresund strait. Sixteen others from the sinking wooden boat were able to get into life rafts.

Five survivors were admitted to hospitals but were not critically injured.

The dead _ all from the fishing boat _ were Danes, ranging in age from their late 50s to 82, police said.

The fishing boat had left Copenhagen for a daylong pleasure trip. It was rammed by the Norwegian-registered Skagen Clipper at late morning.

Police said thick fog had cut visibility to about 160 feet.

The strait is a busy shipping route between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.
