Recruiter Convicted of Sex Charges

February 20, 2000

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ An Air Force recruiter was convicted of committing sexual acts with two 17-year-old female recruits and of improper conduct toward other women.

Air Force Master Sgt. Raymond Allen, a 16-year veteran, faces a maximum sentence of life in a military prison at his sentencing Monday by a court martial jury.

Allen, 37, was convicted of consensual sodomy with a 17-year-old high school student, and of attempted forcible sodomy with another 17-year-old.

The woman, who is now in basic training, said Allen lured her to his home and then kissed and groped her.

``There’s a line that has to remain there, and the accused crossed that line,″ Capt. Scott Wilkov, an attorney for the government, said during closing arguments Saturday. ``He knows what sexual harassment is about.″

Defense attorney Capt. Bryan Watson said Allen, a married father of two, had too much to lose to risk such behavior.

``Is this the kind of man who’s going to lay it all on the line for a cheap thrill?″ he told jurors.

The jury also found Allen guilty of three counts of attempting to develop or maintain an intimate relationship with recruits.
