Stocks Open Narrowly Lower

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices have started narrowly lower on Wall Street Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 14 points. Decliners outnumber advancers by a narrow margin on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Nasdaq Composite Index was down three points and the Standard-and-Poor’s 500 Stock Index had lost a fraction of a point.

Wall Street’s main focus remains the war in Iraq. And hopes for a quick end to the war have kept the market’s tone generally favorable in recent sessions.

But U.S. corporations are beginning to post first-quarter earnings reports this week. There are concerns that weak results could prevent the market from making much of a move to higher ground.

Market averages have been lower across Europe after declines overnight for Asian share prices.

Wall Street opened solidly higher yesterday but failed to hold the advance, finishing with just modest gains.
