PA grand jury declines action in officer-involved shooting

February 27, 2019

A grand jury called in Jefferson County declined to take action Tuesday against an Port Arthur police officer at the center of a Dec. 28 shooting.

Jefferson County District Attorney Bob Wortham confirmed the grand jury saw a presentation about the details of the shooting before its decision, but he declined comment on what evidence jurors saw.

Port Arthur Police Chief Timothy Duriso could not be reached for comment.

The man killed in the December shooting was identified by his sister-in-law as Shane Lyons, 35, of Port Arthur.

At the time, the Port Arthur Police Department said officers responded to a call in reference to a man carrying a large weapon, approached a suspect and commanded the man to drop the weapon several times. The suspect refused and advanced toward the officer who drew his gun and shot at the man, police said then.

Bystanders at the scene told the Enterprise they heard six or seven shots. They also described the weapon as a machete, but officials would not confirm that detail.

The officer still remains unnamed at this time.
