ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) _ Software developer David A. Duffield, one of America’s wealthiest men, is giving $20 million to Cornell University, the school said Wednesday.

It is the third largest single gift in the history of Cornell, where Duffield earned an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering in 1963 and a master’s in business administration a year later.

Duffield is the founder and chief executive of PeopleSoft Inc. of Pleasanton, Calif., which develops software for manufacturing, financial management and higher education. In Forbes magazine’s latest list of wealthiest Americans, Duffield ranked 93rd with net worth of $1.2 billion.

His donation will be used to help build a new engineering research and teaching center that will be named Duffield Hall.

Cornell’s largest donation, $30 million, came from the Spencer T. Olin Foundation in 1986.
