Paul Manafort will remain in jail during trial, court rules
Paul Manafort will remain behind bars while he fights two separate prosecutions, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday, upholding a district court judge’s decision that Mr. Manafort tried to tamper with witnesses in the case against him.
Jury selection began Tuesday in Alexandria, Virginia, in one case against Mr. Manafort, but the detention order stems from the other prosecution in federal court in D.C.
The appeals court said Mr. Manafort “pushed the envelope” of the conditions of his bail by testing a gag order, and contacting potential witnesses.
Even after the lower court warned Mr. Manafort, he kept it up.
“Appellant failed to heed those warnings and went right past the line with the alleged witness tampering,” the appeals court ruled.
