Man Accused Of Theft At Mall, Vandalism At Police Station

April 5, 2019

SCRANTON — A 52-year-old Scranton man stole from the purse of a mall pizza place employee last month and then vandalized a police station holding cell with toilet paper believed soaked with his own urine when arrested this week, officers said. Michael Earl Mathay, 1403 Mulberry St., Apt. 2, faces charges including theft, institutional vandalism and resisting arrest. Police say that he stole Elena Corpeno’s wallet and car keys March 21 while she worked at a pizza place in the Viewmont Mall, according to a complaint by Dickson City Police Officer John Sobieski. Mathay returned to the mall Wednesday and police arrested him. He threw his body against the interior of the police car and took toilet paper believed soaked with his urine and threw it at the camera of the station’s holding cell. Mathay is in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $7,500 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. — JOSEPH KOHUT
