Durban, Edmonton bid for 2022 Commonwealth Games
LONDON (AP) — Durban and Edmonton are vying to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games federation said Monday the South African and Canadian cities formally declared their intention to bid for the event.
Final bids are to be lodged by March 2015. The federation will vote on the host city in September 2015.
Glasgow is hosting this year’s Commonwealth Games, while the 2018 event will be held in Gold Coast, Australia.
The bid by Durban could rule out a South African candidacy for the 2024 Olympics.
The Commonwealth Games would be the first major multi-sport event in South Africa, which hosted the 2010 World Cup.
South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee chief Gideon Sam says “we’ve done exhaustive background work and are now of the opinion the country is ready for a major multi-code sports event.”
Canada has hosted the Commonwealth Games four times.
