Omak boy, 8, dies after Sunday plunge into frigid water
An 8-year-old boy died Sunday after falling into frigid water in a drainage canal near Omak.
Chanse Tepley had reportedly wandered into a fenced area near a reservoir at Conconully Lake with his 5-year-old brother.
Tony Hawley, the incoming sheriff of Okanogan County, said Tepley was apparently walking along the concrete perimeter of the canal when he fell into the water through a layer of ice. His brother ran to a nearby house for help.
Hawley said Tepley was in the water for about a half-hour before first responders pulled him out. He was taken to Mid-Valley Hospital in Omak, where staff tried unsuccessfully to warm and resuscitate him, Hawley said.
Tepley turned 8 on Dec. 14, according to a GoFundMe.com page raising money for his family.
A message on the page said Tepley’s organs would be donated to others in need.
