Judge: police search that found cocaine in car was illegal
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts judge has ruled that state troopers illegally searched a car on Interstate 91 last April when they found cocaine and charged two Vermont men with trafficking drugs.
The Republican reports (http://bit.ly/1OvM5IK ) that Judge Richard Carey in Hampden Superior Court ruled Wednesday that cocaine found in the car cannot be used as evidence against the men, and any statements they made are suppressed.
State police pulled over Jed Billado of Essex Junction, Vermont, and Edward Hunt of Winooski, Vermont, for speeding in Holyoke. Carey ruled that Trooper Daniel Moran had no reason to order the two men and a woman out of the car and search the vehicle.
Billado and Hunt have denied charges of trafficking up to 7 ounces of cocaine. A trial is scheduled for March 22.
