Nursing home employee charged with striking patient

August 31, 2018

A Somerset woman is facing charges that she struck a patient at Meadow View Nursing Center in Berlin.

Berlin Borough police charged Melissa Ohler, 49, Husband Road, with three misdemeanor counts of neglect of care of a dependent person.

A borough officer interviewed Ohler Aug. 18 about the incident on Aug. 15. She said that she was working the 3 to 11 p.m. shift when she went to change a woman. She said the woman became aggressive and began hitting her and Paris Harley, a certified nursing assistant. According to court documents, Ohler struck the woman’s lower left arm three times with an open hand because she was aggressive.

Ohler told police she struck the woman because she was frustrated, according to an affidavit.

A message left with nursing home Administrator Tammy Leister asking whether Ohler is still employed was not returned Wednesday afternoon.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sept. 27 before District Judge Douglas McCall Bell in Meyersdale.
