St Vincent Routs US Virgin Islands

Rodney Jack and Alwyn Guy scored three goals each as St. Vincent and the Grenadines routed the U.S. Virgin Islands 9-0 Sunday in a qualifier for the 2002 World Cup.

Anguilla, the nation with the worst FIFA rating among the 198 who entered the tournament, lost 3-1 to the Bahamas.

Qualifying for the 2002 tournament opened Saturday, when Trinidad and Tobago beat the Netherlands Antilles 5-0 and Honduras beat Nicaragua 3-0.

There were eight more games Sunday in the first round of qualifying for the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

At Kingstown, the visiting U.S. Virgin Islands fell behind 5-0 in the first half. Jack scored in the sixth and 15th minutes, and Guy scored in the 19th, 22nd and 32nd.

Jack made it 6-0 in the 51st, James Cheuitt connected in the 76th and 88th, and Kenlyn Gonsalves scored in the 83rd.

Each series in the opening Caribbean rounds is home-and-home, total-goals.

At The Valley, the visiting Bahamas got goals from Anton Haven (12th), George Moussis (27th) and Kevin Davies (32nd). Kenneth Hughes scored on a penalty kick for Anguilla in the 70th.

At Castries, St. Lucie beat visiting Suriname 1-0 on a 46th-minute goal by Renee Regis.

At Havana, Cuba beat the Cayman Islands 4-0 on goals by Luis Marten (38th), Ariel Alvarez (56th), Serguei Prado (87th) and Miguel Gandara (90th).

At Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic beat Monserrat, playing its first World Cup qualifier, 3-0 on goals by Omar Zapata (31st), Miguel Perez (38th) and Carlos Reyes (44th).

At Tortola, Bermuda beat the British Virgin Islands 5-1 as Shaun Goater scored three goals. Kyle Lightbourne put the visitors ahead in the 20th and Paul Cann connected two minutes later. Goater’s goals came in the 35th, 38th and 65th minutes. opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Avondale Williams scored for the BVI in the 61st.

At Bridgetown, Anthony Modeste scored in the 75th and 77th minute to help visiting Grenada come back from two goals down to tie Barbados. Jerry Alexander scored in the 31st and 47th minutes for Grenada.

In Central America’s Group A, El Salvador opened with a 5-0 rout of Belize at San Salvador. Roberto Martinez scored in the 14th, Jorge Rodriguez in the 31st, Raul Diaz Arce in the 70th minute, Ronald Carritos in the 80th and William Torres in the 88th.

Teams from a record 195 countries are playing 809 qualifiers to determine the 29 teams that will join defending champion France and co-hosts Japan and South Korea in the tournament, to be played from June 1-30, 2002.
