NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) _ Tom Singer limited defending national champion Stanford to six hits in 8 1-3 innings as fifth-seeded St. John’s defeated the second-seeded Cardinal 5-3 Friday in the Division I Northeast Regional Baseball tournament.

Singer got relief help from Charlie Wonsowicz, who earned his first save.

St. John’s got a run in the second inning on singles by Tom Dobson and Joe Fallacaro and a fielder’s choice. The Redmen made it 3-0 on RBIs by Jerry Kelly and Dobson.

Stanford cut it to 3-1 on a RBI single by catcher Doug Robbins in the fourth. St. John’s made it 5-1 with two unearned runs before Stanford got single runs in the seventh and ninth.

Singer picked three Stanford runners off base to kill rallies in the fifth and seventh.

Mike Mussina, 9-3, took the loss for Stanford, which was to play Friday against Fordham at 7 p.m.

The Cardinal fell to 37-22 while St. Johns is now 29-19-1 and will oppose Clemson Saturday at noon.
