Española man accused of spying on female neighbor indicted
A Santa Fe County grand jury has indicted a 68-year-old Española man on charges of voyeurism and breaking and entering after he was accused of planting an air freshener containing a recording device in a neighbor’s bedroom.
The Española Police Department said in a criminal complaint that the woman discovered the device in May while changing air fresheners. When she opened one, the document said, she noticed a “blinking blue light” attached to a battery pack and memory card.
The woman called police, who examined the device and images on the memory card, which the complaint said included footage of Johnny Chacon placing the air freshener containing the recording device on the woman’s dresser.
“The whole time, the recorder is activated and records the male subject in the act,” the complaint says.
When asked by investigators if he knew why police summoned him to the police station, according to the complaint, Chacon said he was “the culprit for his wrongdoings on his neighbor.”
“He acknowledged he had entered her house without permission placing the camera in her bedroom without her knowing,” the complaint says.
A man who answered a call placed to a number listed as belonging a person named Johnny Chacon in Española with the same birthdate as the accused said Tuesday he knew nothing about the case.
