Winfield, Murphy Named Captains
NEW YORK (AP) _ Dave Winfield and Dale Murphy were picked Wednesday as the honorary captains for the July 11 All-Star game at Atlanta’s Turner Field.
Murphy won the NL Most Valuable Player award playing for the Atlanta Braves in 1982 and 1983. A seven-time NL All-Star, his major league career lasted from 1976-90, and he finished with a .265 average, 398 homers, 2,111 hits and 1,266 RBIs.
Winfield, a 12-time All-Star, four for San Diego and eight for the New York Yankees, will be the AL honorary captain. His career lasted from 1973-95, and he finished with a .283 average, 465 homers, 3,110 hits, 1,833 RBIs and 223 steals. He is 21st on the career home run list.
