Meeting to Settle Dispute Turned Deadly

December 20, 1993

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (AP) _ A man who was fatally shot at a crowded mall restaurant met his attackers there to settle a dispute, police said Sunday.

Richard F. Scarpino of Jackson County, Ore., and Kyllo S. Bradley of Vancouver, British Columbia, both 23, were booked for investigation of murder after Saturday’s shooting. Both suspects and the victim, 24-year-old Aum Trammell of Long Beach, were armed when they came to the meeting, police said.

Police would not disclose the nature of the dispute, but said it did not involve drugs or gangs.

″They came armed with large caliber handguns, semiautomatics. We know they intentionally came to the Red Robin for a discussion regarding an unresolved dispute among them,″ Sgt. Avery Richey said.

The men were eating on the patio of the Red Robin restaurant at the Galleria at South Bay mall when they suddenly began arguing, police said. The men got to their feet and about 10 shots were fired, sending hundreds of people ducking and diving for cover.

Only one gun was believed to have been fired, Richey said. The suspects were arrested immediately because there were numerous police officers at the mall, which was filled with holiday shoppers.
