CHENEY, Wash. (AP) _ Joe Sewell rushed for a career best 182 yards and one touchdown as Eastern Washington routed Southwest Texas State 38-7 on Saturday.

Eastern Washington won its second consecutive game to improve to 2-1. Southwest Texas State, of San Marcos, Texas, fell to 2-1.

Eastern was leading 14-7 when Sewell ripped off a 76-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to blow the game open. The sixth-year senior’s yardage came on just 13 carries, most of them in the first half, in Eastern’s home opener.

It was the 11th best rushing performance in school history. The Eagles rushed for 298 yards in the game.

Eastern safety Maurice Perigo returned an interception a school record 96 yards for a touchdown in the second half. It was the second consecutive week he scored on an interception.

Quarterback Harry Leons completed 10 of 20 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Southwest Texas’ only score came with 11:39 left in first half when senior Claude Mathis scored from 1 yard out. Mathis rushed 31 times for 136 yards in the game.

Bobcats quarterback David Williams completed 18 of 36 passes for 181 yards, but was intercepted three times.
