Dracut Can’t Keep Pace with North Andover
DRACUT -- The North Andover Knights improved their season record to 6-0 with a 40-21 victory over the Dracut Middies at Beaudry Field Friday evening.
The Scarlet Knights clinched at least a share of the MVC Division 2 title.
Explosive Junior back Freddy Gabin rushed for two first-quarter touchdowns that gave North Andover a 13-0 lead with 4:42 left.
Dracut (3-2) closed to 13-7 when senior quarterback Devin Lambert dove and hit the right python after eluding a sack on the 10 yard line.
Senior Cameron McCullough sparked the drive with a 60-yard carry on an option play. Lambert carried to the 5 on a keeper before scoring on the broken pass play.
Dracut found itself trailing 26-7 in the second quarter when Lambert and sophomore Jean Carlos Santiago hooked up for a 72-yard scoring play. On first down at his own 28, Lambert dropped back and threw a pass over the defender that Santiago caught in stride at midfield.
The speedy Santiago carried it into the end zone. Senior Kyle Durkin hit his second extra point to bring the score to 26-14.
Dracut’s defense thwarted two North Andover drives to end the first half. Senior linebacker Allyn French hustled in front of a pass and picked it off at the Dracut 10. Junior defensive back Kyle Silva stripped the ball and then dove on the fumble, again deep in Dracut territory.
North Andover pulled away in the second half despite turning the ball over twice on downs. Senior lineman William Peters would have two sacks.
Dracut showed no quit as Lambert and McCullough hooked up for a 68-yard scoring play with 2:12 to play. The play was a well-executed catch and run with McCullough finding running room and streaking down the left sideline.
