Watertown doubles teams shine at Badger girls tennis invite

August 21, 2018

LAKE GENEVA — Watertown’s girls tennis team split six duals over the course of two days at the season-opening Lake Geneva Badger Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Goslings lost to Burlington 4-3, beat Milton 6-1 and lost to Eau Claire Memorial 6-1. On Saturday, Watertown beat Elkhorn 5-2 and Janesville Parker 7-0 before losing to Jefferson 4-3.

“This was a great opening weekend for our team,” Watertown girls tennis coach Andy Dobbins said.

“The goal of this tournament was for us to play a lot of tennis and start to figure out who we are as a team. We faced some great competition and picked up some nice team wins.

“Eau Claire Memorial is a phenomenal team, one of the best in the state. That was a real challenge for the girls. The duals against Burlington and Jefferson were very tight and could have gone either way. But I’m not too concerned about that. This was about gaining experience.”

Watertown’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Jenna Koepp and Katie Schleicher went 6-0, taking all six matches in straight sets. Only one of those sets went to a tiebreaker.

The No. 2 doubles team of Sydney Linskens and Abby Marr and the No. 3 team of Hannah Baneck and Grace Bowman each finished 5-1.

“I’m really happy with our doubles lineup at this point,” Dobbins said. “All three teams are working so well together for this early in the season. We won 16 of 18 doubles matches, so I’m very impressed with that result.”

Aubrey Schmutzler won two matches on Saturday at No. 1 singles.

“The majority of our singles lineup is still a work in progress,” Dobbins said.

“Aubrey is our No. 1 and I’m proud of the fight she showed. She was able to pick up a few wins, including against a state qualifier from last year.

“The rest of the spots will take some time to sort out. We have several girls that are very similar in ability, and they all gained great experience this weekend. From top to bottom all of these girls are great kids and I’m excited to see what we can do this season.”

Watertown travels to play Beaver Dam on Tuesday.
