Convicted Rapist Attacks Prosecutors In Court
MAYWOOD, Ill. (AP) _ A man charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl twice attacked prosecutors in court, slightly injuring two lawyers, officials said.
Edmund Jimenez on Monday tried to crawl across the defense table toward Assistant State’s Attorney Thomas Tucker before the case went to the jury, said spokeswoman Lisa Howard.
″You are disgusting,″ he screamed at the prosecutors.
Jimenez, 29, appeared calm when the jury returned 3 1/2 hours later, Ms. Howard said.
But after the guilty verdicts were announced he broke away from sheriff’s deputies and hit Tucker on the head with a metal object he had concealed, she said.
Co-prosecutor Mary Ann Callum was scratched on one arm before officers subdued Jimenez.
The jury convicted Jimenez on four counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted aggravated kidnapping.
Jimenez kidnapped and sexually assaulted the 7-year-old Berwyn girl in January, and attempted to kidnap a 9-year-old Cicero girl as she walked home from school, prosecutors said.
Jimenez had been on parole after serving three years of an eight-year term for robbery and the rape of a 9-year-old girl, officials said.
Cook County Circuit Judge J.P. Banks revoked Jimenez’s bond and set sentencing for Nov. 24. He faces up to 60 years in prison.
Spokesmen for the state’s attorney’s office said they were considering filing charges in the attacks on the prosecutors.
